Plan your Songkran getaway this April with these tips to avoid traffic jams and accidents on Thailand's roads.
According to statistics from the year 2023, during the Songkran festival period, accidents accumulated over 7 days, totaling 2,203 incidents. These accidents resulted in 264 fatalities and 2,208 injuries. Bangkok had the highest number of fatalities with 22 people.
In the year 2024, the Highway Police News Agency has released information on avoiding congested routes during the Songkran holiday period to ensure convenience and peace of mind for travelers. The highway police have recommended alternative routes for all 4 regions.
Alternate Routes to Avoid Traffic in Northern Thailand (Bangkok - Northern Thailand)
Eastern Ring Road (Highway No. 9): Turn left at the elevated intersection over Khlong Luang, using Talat 3214 to enter Talat 347. Then, turn left at the Bang Pa Han intersection to enter Talat 32 (Asia Road).
Western Ring Road (Highway No. 9): Turn left onto Taling Chan - Chai Nat Road (Talat 340), connecting to Phaholyothin Road (Highway No. 1). Then, turn left at the Pho O intersection (Highway No. 1) heading towards Nakhon Sawan Province.
Alternative Routes to Avoid Traffic in Eastern Thailand (Bangkok - Eastern Region)
- Expressway No. 7 (Motorway)
- Use Highway No. 304 passing through Min Buri - Nong Chok to exit to the Eastern Region.
- Use Highway No. 34 (Bang Na - Trat) passing through Bang Na - Bang Pakong, or use the Burapha Withi Expressway to exit to the Eastern Region.
- Highway No. 3 (Sukhumvit Road)
Alternative Routes to Avoid Traffic in Northeast Thailand (Bangkok - Northeast)
- Phahonyothin Road, turn right at the Phu Khao intersection onto Phu Khao Lom Sak Road (Highway No. 21), turn right at the Muang Khom intersection onto Highway No. 2256, or turn left onto Highway No. 205 to enter Highway No. 201 heading to Chaiyaphum Province.
- From Bangkok to Chachoengsao Province, use Highway No. 304 (Amphoe Phanom Sarakham - Amphoe Kabin Buri - Amphoe Wang Nam Khiao - Amphoe Pak Thong Chai) heading towards Nakhon Ratchasima Province.
- From Bangkok to Sa Kaeo Province - Aranyaprathet - Amphoe Ta Phraya - Amphoe Non Din Daeng - Amphoe La Han Sai, enter Buri Ram Province.
