1. Packaging Must Be Standard
Check the packaging for any signs of damage or tampering. It should be sealed properly and include information such as the type of mask, usage instructions, production and import sources, production date, and expiration date.
2. No Chemical or Plastic Odor
A standard-quality face mask should not release any particles when squeezed and should not have a chemical or plastic odor when worn.
3. No Defects
A standard-quality face mask should be free of defects or stains, as these may indicate that the mask has been reused, washed, and repackaged for sale.
4. Has a Filter Layer
When you cut open a face mask, a standard-quality mask will have a filter layer inside. If the mask lacks a filter layer, even if it appears thick with multiple layers, it will not provide the same level of virus protection as a genuine mask.
5. Water-Resistant to Drops and Mist
Test the mask by dropping water on it. If the water seeps through, it means the mask is not effective in protecting against viruses. However, some brands may resist water but lack an internal filter for virus or small particle protection. Therefore, it is important to also check inside the mask for a filter layer.
6. Must Have Certification or Standards Marks
Masks that are effective at filtering small particles may still offer protection against viruses like COVID-19. When choosing such masks, check for labels indicating certification or standards, such as ISO 13485, which signifies a quality management system covering the design, development, production, and sale of medical devices.
If we purchase low-quality masks, even wearing them constantly won’t effectively protect against or prevent the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, before buying a mask, check if it meets the six criteria mentioned. This should help increase your confidence in its effectiveness.
